Keep Up Your Courage!

Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’  So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

Acts 27:24-25

Salt + Light 'Ohana,

We live in times that will test what we are made of.  The storms of life will come, in fact, they are upon us now as a nation, and as the body of Christ.

This 4th of July, let’s not give into fear or worry, but instead, let’s celebrate that God has a plan for our country and for every one of us!  In order to grab ahold of God’s purpose and plan, it will take men and women of courage and faith in Jesus Christ!  Join us this Sunday to find out how you can “Keep Up Your Courage!”

Happy 4th of July!

Finding Connecting Points

Salt + Light 'Ohana,

In Acts chapter 17, Paul was in Athens speaking to the philosophers and government officials of the day.  Within the Greek culture, they worshipped many gods, so many in fact that they even had an altar dedicated to the worship of “AN UNKNOWN GOD.”  How did Paul find a connecting point with this audience and culture, so that he would be able to share the gospel?  How can we make connections within our culture to help others know Christ?  Join us on Sunday at 9am for our online worship service to find out!

Know Him and make Him known!

Flip Our Focus

IMG_5071.jpeg

Salt + Light `Ohana,

This Sunday, we will be continuing in the book of Acts, looking at the life of Saul.  Saul began persecuting followers of Jesus, and then he had an amazing encounter with Jesus that transformed his life.  But Saul’s journey didn’t end there!  He continued to keep his focus on Jesus, and God transformed him into the apostle Paul.  How did this amazing transformation happen?  It was a matter of focus.  In this time, we need to keep our focus on Jesus as well, if we are going to become all that God wants us to become!  It isn’t easy, so come and see what we can do together to “Flip Our Focus!”

Happy Father’s Day weekend!

Pastor Max

Reminder!  Surveys are due on Sunday, June 21st!

Dear Salt + Light `Ohana,

As a church family, we look forward to the day when we can meet together in person for our worship service on a Sunday morning!  Thank you for your patience and understanding, and continued participation in our online worship services, online small groups and serving opportunities!  As far as meeting on campus again, we are waiting to hear from the Department of Education and Waikiki School about when we would be allowed to use their facilities.  It could happen sometime this summer, or at a later date, the bottom line is that we just don’t know when that time will come.

In the meanwhile, we have decided to put together an online survey, in order to hear from your thoughts, and better understand how our church is feeling about returning to in-person worship services.  We would really appreciate your feedback so that we can make the transition back as safe, smooth and welcoming as possible for you, your `ohana and our community!

Returning to In-Person Worship Services SURVEY (click here)

We want to give everyone a few weeks to complete the survey, and ask that you please fill it out by Sunday, June 21st at 10:00pm.

We look forward to hearing from you!

With love and thanks,

Pastor Max

How to Navigate Times of Trouble

Salt + Light `Ohana,

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”  John 16:33

Times of trouble will come to those who follow Jesus.  We are living in days when Christians face pressure, problems and even persecution!  Join us this Sunday as we continue through the book of Acts, and learn how the first century Church navigated through times of trouble with God’s power and wisdom!

In His peace,

Pastor Max

Beginning next Sunday, June 14, we are going to be having virtual Sunday School!  Aunty Jeannette will be teaching the Preschool and Elementary aged kids all about Jesus online from the comforts of their own living room.

We will be starting a new series which talks about our feelings and how God has given us "blueprints," which is the Bible, to help us to deal with how we feel. The children will be learning that God is greater than our feelings, He knows everything, and He is always there for us however we are feeling.

Parents, be on the lookout for an email with directions on how to join our weekly meetings. Every Sunday, you can watch the sermon as a family, attend your small group meeting, then have your child join us for our virtual Sunday School at 10:30 am. The platform that we will be using is WebEx, a program similar to Zoom. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

What are You Focusing On?

waikikihearts.jpeg

Salt + Light `Ohana,

With so many difficult things going on right now, it can be tough to see clearly to know what to do and how to respond.  We need God’s clarity and focus to move forward in the direction God wants us to go in.  Without His leading, we are directionless and will stray way off course!

Please join us this Sunday for our online worship service at 9:00am, and see how God wants to help you focus on the essentials!   Come and learn how God wants to help you a greater devotion to the most important things!  We are the Church, and God has a plan for us.  Don’t miss this Sunday’s message to learn how to live that plan out!

Following Jesus, the hope of the world,

Pastor Max

SALT AND LIGHT WORSHIP SERVICE UPDATE

Dear Salt and Light 'Ohana,

Thank you for being full of faith and courage during this unprecedented crisis.  Do you know that the last day that we met together in person at Waikiki School for Sunday Worship Service was on March 15th?  Yes, ten weeks ago!  Over that time span, we have never stopped being the Church, as transitioned from in person gatherings - to online services and small group meetings.  I have been amazed at how flexible and willing our church is to adapt and continue to love and serve God and others in our community in the midst of such challenging times!  I praise the Lord!

With the opening up of other churches around Hawaii (and the nation) you are probably wondering, “When will Salt + Light meet again in person for worship service on Sundays?”  What a great question… I have been asking the same thing!

To give you the latest update, our church is currently in discussions with Waikiki School to see when we will be allowed to use their campus on Sunday mornings.  As of today, the school, who is under the Department of Education’s policies, has notified us that we will not be allowed to meet on the campus any time before Sunday, June 30th.  We will continue to communicate with the school and DOE, and as soon as information becomes available to our church, it will be made known to you through email updates and our website.  There really is no timetable, and it might be a while before we can use the school campus, so I humbly ask for your continued patience.

Whenever we do start gathering again in person, we will make sure to follow the proper guidelines regarding social distancing, cleaning and keeping our church safe.  If you are a senior citizen, or experiencing any symptoms of being sick, we kindly ask that you stay at home and watch the service online, which will be provided live each week.  Whoever you are, please feel no pressure to come back to worship services – just ask God what is the right timing for you and your family and come back when you are ready!

Most importantly, let’s continue to pray and ask God to keep us close to Him in this time.  Remember, peace is a person, and His name is Jesus.  Enjoy the closeness of His presence like never before!  God knows everything that we are going through and He is with us every step of the way!  And, so is your church family.  Your brothers and sisters are here for you, so if you need any help or support at any time, do not hesitate to ask.

If you have any questions, please email me at info@saltandlighthawaii.org.

In faith, hope and love,

Pastor Max

Church is Essential!

SLHchurchessential.jpg

Salt + Light `Ohana,

Church Is Essential!  We’ve always known that!  We never stopped being the Church, it just looked a little different…

Together as the body of Christ, I was so blessed to witness our church continue being salt and light by working together to reach out to homeless veteran’s with food, help a local women’s shelter with lunch on Mother’s Day and collect donations for clothing and other needed supplies, as well as meeting needs within our church and within the community!

Thank you for journeying with us as we moved our services online for a few months!  We will be continuing our online service this week and will be discussing how Jesus teaches us to love and serve others by washing feet.  Would you like to learn how to humbly serve others with the hands and heart of Jesus?  If so, join us online this Sunday at 9:00am!

Jesus is Essential,

Pastor Max

When Will We Start Meeting at Waikiki School Again?

Salt + Light Hawaii is currently in discussions with Waikiki Elementary School to see when we will be allowed to use their campus for our Sunday Worship Service again.  We hope to have more information soon, and will be sure to get you the latest developments by email and on our website at saltandlighthawaii.org.

When we start gathering again in person, we will make sure to follow the proper guidelines regarding social distancing, cleaning and keeping our church safe.  If you are experiencing any symptoms of being sick, we kindly ask that you stay at home and watch the service online.

If you have any questions, please email us at info@saltandlighthawaii.org

A "Fish and Poi" God of Miracles

SLHfishandpoi.jpg

Salt + Light `Ohana,

What impossible situation are you in right now?  Do you have the faith to believe God will accomplish a miracle in the situation?

This Sunday, we will learn in the book of John how Jesus multiplied a few fish and loaves (or fish and poi in Hawaii) to feed over 5,000 hungry people!  Join us online and come and see how Jesus will help stretch, grow and multiply your little into a lot!

Are you ready for Jesus to do a miracle in your life?

Bringing my fish and poi to Jesus,

Feeling Disqualified?

SLHlivingwater.jpg

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water
will be thirsty again,
 but whoever drinks the water
I give them will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give them will become
in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-14

Salt + Light `Ohana,

Have you ever felt like you’ve been disqualified from God’s best plan for your life?  Have you been tempted to throw in the towel and give up following Jesus?  If that’s you, don’t believe it for a second!  God has a perfect plan for your life, and wants to take you from the sidelines and put you back in the game!

Join us this Sunday to find out how Jesus can do that in your life!

Filled with Living Water,

Jesus: God or Good Man?

GodorGoodMan.jpg

“But these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,
and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

John 20:31

Salt + Light `Ohana,

Our world is fine with Jesus being a good teacher, or a peaceful, loving hippie, but our world takes issue with Jesus being God.  Have you noticed a world that is increasingly hostile towards the Jesus of the Bible?  While other religious leaders such as Buddha or Mohammed are welcomed, there is little to no room for Jesus in the inn, the university, the media or the government any longer!

This week, we will learn about who the Bible says that Jesus really is.  He is God and He is with us, and we can go out with boldness into the world, and let others know the Good News!  During this dark time our world is experiencing, let’s grab ahold of the truth in the Bible about Jesus and go out and share the hope of the Gospel with others!

All for Jesus,

Pastor Max

Thank you to everyone who donated food for our “1 Can… Yes, 1 Can!” Food Drive!  We were able to collect food for homeless veterans and veterans moving into transitional housing.  Along with food, the notes of encouragement will uplift those needing hope during this time!  A special mahalo to May Kealoha for organizing the food drive!
